BIROL ÜNEL AND TRANSYLVANIA AT THE 17th LIFFe
Some days ago the organisers of the 17th Liffe, which will between 10 and 24 November 2006 doubtlessly attract numerous film buffs and filmmakers to Ljubljana, returned from the 59th Cannes International Film Festival. In Cannes, the Slovenian pavilion was also visited by Birol Ünel, the lead in Best European Film Head-on (Gegen die Wand), as well as in Transylvania, the closing film of the Cannes Festival. The director Tony Gatlif cast Asia Argento in the leading female role. Jelka Stergel, LIFFe programme director, invited Ünel to present his film also at Liffe.
About LIFFe The Ljubljana International Film Festival LIFFe has become the most prominent film event in Slovenia. The 16th Liffe attracted over 51, 000 spectators and exhibited 108 films. As many as 27 screenings were sold-out, and the festival hosted 55 guests (among others Serge Frydman, Udo Kier, Dagur Kari, Anno Saul, Ventura Pons, Marc Rothemund). The most important role of the 17th LIFFe remains unchanged: to show those non-Hollywood and auctorial films that are not granted regular Slovenian distribution. Last year, 27 festival films were released in Slovenian theatres which amounts to 25% of the films screened at LIFFe.
